There is a lot of speculation in the football world about Lionel Messi’s possible return to Barcelona. The Catalan club would be in favour of such a transfer, reportedly not even the player himself would be against it. However, Barcelona would have to sacrifice a lot if the transfer is completed.
According to the latest information, Lionel Messi is not fully satisfied at PSG. At least not as he was at Barcelona. That’s why there are speculations about Messi returning to Barcelona.
The Catalan club would definitely be up for it. The fans there have not yet come to terms with the way the club has parted ways with one of the greatest legends in the club’s history. Messi was forced to leave as a free agent in the summer of 2021 due to the club’s financial problems. The club couldn’t even register some players at the time.
But would Messi’s possible transfer to Barcelona make sense? The management has changed in that time, so there should be no rifts within the club. Messi’s return would also make sense from a marketing point of view, but less so from a playing point of view.
The departure of Lionel Messi has triggered a generational change within the club. There are still older players like Robert Lewandowski, ter Stegen or Sergio Busquets in the squad, but they are still very valid members of the squad and they are also passing on experience to young talents.
For example, Pedri and Gavi are in the line-up, Balde has pushed the experienced Jordi Alba out of the starting line-up and the young stopper pairing of Araujo, Christensen looks interesting.
Xavi has added a face to the team and has overhauled the style that Barcelona has presented so far. In the case of Messi’s arrival, the team’s tactics would once again have to be subordinated to the Argentine footballer, which would indeed bring points to the club, however, after his departure, the club would once again have game problems.
And it is not even clear how much longer, given his advanced age, Messi can still play at the highest level.
The transfer is unlikely to happen because of the conditions the club cannot provide Messi. In order to register the Argentine footballer, the Catalan club would have to part with several players. At the same time, Ansu Fati, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, for example, would have to leave the Camp Nou. And that is not something the club is willing to accept.
Lionel Messi is therefore likely to stay at PSG, where he is playing well. In the current season, he has played 26 competitive games, scoring 15 goals and assisting 14 more.
