Karolina Pliskova is still the best-ranked Czech tennis player, but her performance has been less than ideal lately. Is the former world number one’s best behind her?

Karolína Plíšková has long been one of the best Czech tennis players. In 2017, she even reached the world number one position for eight weeks. She has been in the top ten continuously since September 2016.

But that streak is now in jeopardy. The native of Louny is currently ninth, with only 225 points separating her from 11th-ranked Kiki Bertens.

In the current season, the twenty-nine-year-old confidante of Sascha Bajin, former coach of Wozniacki and Osaka, is struggling. She has already participated in six tournaments, but has not had any significant success.

The best is the third round of the Australian Open. There she met her compatriot Karolina Muchova, with whom she lost both sets 5:7.

In the other five tournaments the same scenario repeated itself. A win in the opening round was always followed by a loss in the next round. Three times it was against the American Jessica Pegula, who gave the Czech number one a canary.

If we look at the rankings from the current season, we can find the three-time Fed Cup winner and the 2016 US Open finalist at the 30th place.

Of the Czech players, Markéta Vondroušová, Petra Kvitová, Barbora Krejčíková and Karolína Muchová are better off.

Karolina Pliskova is one of the best tennis players who have never won a grand slam. Her participation in the Tournament of Champions, where she hasn’t missed since 2016, is also in danger.

If she continues to perform the same way and there is no significant improvement, the Czech is most likely past her prime.
