The Serbian tennis player, who recently enjoyed his 21st Grand Slam title when he dominated the famous Wimbledon after a final victory over Nick Kyrgios, has withdrawn from the tournament to be held in Canada next week.
Novak Djokovic cannot enter Canada until he is fully vaccinated against the coronavirus. This was announced by the organizers of the Masters, a tournament that will be held in Montreal.
The same rules for entry as in Canada also apply in the United States, where the US Open, the fourth and final Grand Slam of the season, starts on 29 August.
Until recently, it was reported in the world media that Djokovic was still hoping to be allowed to play in one of the biggest tournaments. But hope is slowly dying.
In order to obtain full vaccination status, Djokovic would have to undergo two doses at least 14 days apart before entering Canada. He’s already behind schedule. He could, however, make the US Open with a little effort and luck.
Djokovic, however, is clearly standing his ground and will not be vaccinated. He has previously stated that he is prepared to skip Grand Slam tournaments instead of getting vaccinated. However, he is still on the entry list for the US Open.
