Does Fabio Quartararo have the same qualities as legends Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo or Marc Márquez? According to Lin Jarvis, he is the future of MotoGP, but the question mark at the moment hangs over whether he will join Yamaha or move to another team.
The Frenchman Quartararo started his professional career in 2015 and even then many were calling him the new Márquez. However, he didn’t fare too well in his early years in the Moto3 and Moto2 classes.
The breakthrough year of his career came in the 2018 season, when he won his first grand prix. So in 2019, he joined forces with the non-factory Yamaha Petronas SRT team.
With this team in the MotoGP category, he scored seven podium finishes and took six pole positions.
These great performances catapulted him to the factory Yamaha team the following year, with which he managed to win five races. Last year, he secured the Japanese marque’s World Rider Championship title. Yamaha’s last title came in 2015, when Lorenzo of Spain was crowned champion.
MotoGP has run six races so far this year and after a win in Portugal and two second places in Indonesia and Spain, Quartararo is once again leading the riders’ championship.
He will undoubtedly be looking to confirm his first position at the upcoming race in France, when the seventh race of the season will be held at the Le Mans circuit.
Lin Jarvis, who has worked closely with both Rossi and Lorenzo at Yamaha, said that Quartara’s performance can be compared to the aforementioned legends and he is a key figure for the MotoGP series.
“A true champion always has some extra spark or ability. You can say that about champions like Jorge Lorenzo, Valentino Rossi, Marc Márquez or Casey Stoner. And Fabio can be included in that group too,” Jarvis explained in an interview with Motorsport.
“He’s still very young, he’s only 23 years old. But I think he is already a very good driver and has a great future ahead of him. Fortunately for us, his driving style is perfectly suited to the characteristics of the M1 category,” he continues.
Jarvis also hopes that Quartararo’s future will be with Yamaha. His contract with the Japanese team expires at the end of this season and negotiations are currently underway between the two parties to extend it.
“Personally, I hope he will stay with us. Not only is he an amazing talent and fast, but he’s a great guy and a positive influence on our team, our brand and MotoGP as a whole,” Jarvis concluded.
