Insanity or enormous confidence? Check out Mendy’s incredibly risky freakout
Real Madrid took on Barcelona in the semi-finals of the Spanish Super Cup and it was a very interesting spectacle indeed. Los Blancos eventually won 3-2 after extra time, but a lot of fans almost didn’t see the end of the game after a near heart attack caused by Ferland Mendy.
Real Madrid took on Barcelona in the semi-finals of the Spanish Super Cup and it was a very interesting spectacle indeed. Los Blancos eventually won 3:2 after extra time, but many fans almost didn’t see the end of the game after a near heart attack caused by Ferland Mendy.
The beginning of the match belonged to Real Madrid. Barcelona didn’t manage to intercept its breakaway situations, with more efficiency Madrid could have easily led by three goals after thirty minutes. It did culminate in at least one goal when Benzema won the ball in midfield and sent in Vinícius, who made no mistake.
But Real settled for a one-goal lead and Barcelona took the reins of the game. The latter also equalised a few minutes before half-time, albeit after a very fortunate goal when Militao hit de Jong on the rebound and the ball deflected into the net.
Real turned it on again in the second half and went ahead to Benzema’s goal. But the Catalans equalised for the second time when Fati scored. The game went into extra time.
At 2:2 in the 90th minute, Ferland Mendy did something that coach Cardiac would not have tolerated. He can be very happy that Carlo Ancelotti is one of the calmer coaches.
After the duel left goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois lying on the ground, the Real Madrid players moved the ball to the left side of the whitewash to Mendy. Instead of taking the easy way out and sending the ball out of the box, he got the urge to play with the other team.
First he tackled Pedri, then he poked the ball in front of Dembélé and then he made a ‘zidan’ tackle on the returning Pedri. All in his own penalty area. Unbelievable audacity.
