Big surprise, huge crisis! Juventus Torino had another Champions League group stage match against Maccabi Haifa on Tuesday 11 October. Massimiliano Allegri’s charges needed to win in order not to make their fight to advance to the next stage of the competition any more difficult. Juventus failed to do so, losing 0:2 to the Israeli side.
Maccabi Haifa entered the match against Juventus very actively, having created several opportunities in the early stages of the match. The fans did not have to wait long for the first goal, as Omer Atzili scored in the 7th minute, directing the ball with his head after a beautiful centre by Pierre Cornud.
The Israeli side did not shy away from the Turin club, quite the opposite. And this is proved by the fact that Barak Bakhar’s charges created other opportunities. In the 12th minute, Tjarron Chery hit the crossbar from a direct kick. A minute later, Atzili’s shot from the edge of the box was again saved by Wojciech Szczesny.
After that, Juventus managed to get into the game, but it didn’t lead to any serious chances. On the other hand, the home team created more chances. In the 30th minute, the referee explored the possibility of a penalty kick for the home team, but in the end Maccabi Haifa players did not get this advantage.
However, midfielder Atzili got another huge opportunity in the 35th minute, nearly scoring another goal in this match. However, he headed the ball into the box just wide of the left post. Another potential penalty for the home side was reviewed by referee Antonio Mateu in the 40th minute, but everything was within the rules.
The home fans did not seeanother accurate strike until the 42nd minute, and again it was twenty-nine-year-old Atzili. He sent the ball into the right post – 2: 0. Only at the end of the first half did Juventus get a serious chance, but Vlahovic’s header did not end up in the net.
In the second half, Old Lady improved their game, but still failed to score. They pushed their opponent, but had to watch out for the home team’s counterattacks. They created six shooting attempts in the second half, but none of them went between the three posts.
In terms of statistics, Juventus were on the ball more often and of the eight shots produced, five were directed at goalkeeper Josh Cohen. But even that didn’t mean a reduction and the Turin side recorded their third loss in four Group H matches.
Maccabi Haifa thus records a great success, whereupon it is no fluke win, quite the opposite. The Israeli team kept its lead with experience and security.
Juventus continues its poor performances and the big crisis, moreover, it has made it very difficult for it to advance from the group. The question is also whether the club’s management will call for the dismissal of coach Allegri.
