Italian football club Monza is planning to rename its stadium after Silvio Berlusconi, according to recent reports. The former AC Milan owner died on Monday 12 June at the venerable age of 86 and will forever remain one of the biggest personalities in Italian football. He turned AC into an elite world club, and it was also at Monza that he achieved success with promotion to Serie A.
The local council in Monza has submitted a proposal to rename the stadium of top-flight club AC Monza, who intend to rename their stand after the late Silvio Berlusconi.
He will forever remain as one of the biggest personalities in Italian football, especially AC Milan. Berlusconi owned the Milanese outfit for 31 years (1986 to 2017) before selling it to Chinese investors in 2017.
In his time, Berlusconi led AC Milan from near bankruptcy to one of the most successful clubs in European football. During his time at the San Siro, he won 29 trophies, including eight Italian titles and five Champions League wins.
In the last few hours, the Milanese big club has also released a video documenting its golden era.
After selling AC in 2018, Berlusconi decided to buy another Italian club, more specifically the then still third-league Monza. With the latter, he was promoted to Serie A last year.
Monza finished the last season with 52 points in eleventh place in the league table, and Berlusconi has built up a base that will allow the club to establish itself in the top Italian competition for many years to come.
So it is understandable that Monza officials want to pay tribute to Berlusconi. The solution is to rename the stadium, which was one of AC Milan’s original plans. However, for the Rossoneri, the construction of a new stand is still out of sight, so Monza has taken this step.
The original name Stadio Brianteo, now U-Power Stadium after the sale of the rights, should therefore bear the new name in the future, if the club’s proposal goes through. And what does the potential new name sound like? Simply – Stadio Silvio Berlusconi.
