The Sešiovans did not expect anything easy in the first match of the Conference Europa League group stage. In Eden they welcomed Union Berlin, probably the toughest opponent in the group.
Slavia must be all the more satisfied with the final result. They managed to beat the German side 3-1, but it was an interesting drama for a while.
Union had the first big chance of the match, in the 3rd minute Max Kruse shot off the crossbar, but the home team opened the scoring. Alexander Bah sent Slavia into a 1:0 lead in the 18th minute.
After that the game was quite even, active but without any big chances. It was not until the 40th minute that the game’s turning point came. The second yellow card was given to Paul Jaeckel, who was sent off. Union played the rest of the match shorthanded.
However, the team fought back fiercely. He didn’t concede the game, and what’s more, he was able to threaten. One goal was disallowed for offside, but the team from East Berlin drew level at 1-1 in the 70th minute. The goal was scored by Kevin Behrens.
It almost seemed as if Union would be able to get the coveted point due to their good and concentrated performance. But it didn’t happen. In the 84th minute Jan Kuchta was in the right place and sent the ball into the net without any problems.
Four minutes later Ivan Schranz increased the score to 3:1, but the Union goalkeeper could probably have dealt with his shot.
Either way, it’s an important three points for Slavia. Union deserves praise for the way they resisted for so long. In addition, they brought many fans who contributed to a good atmosphere.
