New contracts for Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. Mercedes has taken an important step ahead of the Italian Grand Prix by securing its driver line-up until the end of the 2025 season.
It was only a matter of time, but it’s happening now anyway. A pair of Mercedes drivers have extended their contracts until the end of the 2025 season.
This is a very important signing for the Brackley team. Lewis Hamilton has already proved during his career that he is not only a great driver, but also a great leader. It could be said that it is his experience that is helping Mercedes to get back into the fight for the podium.
As for George Russell, he has only been part of the team since last season. But he has also shown that he is definitely part of the Mercedes family.
Last season, he took the only win for the Silver Arrows when he dominated the race in Saõ Paulo, beating Hamilton in the final drivers’ championship showdown.
“It was an easy decision to continue with the current driver line-up. We have the strongest pairing on the grid and both drivers play a key role in the team moving forward. The strength and stability they provide will be a key building block for our future success,” Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said in an official statement.
Statements from Hamilton and Russell
“Every day we dream of being the best, and for the past ten years we have worked together to achieve that goal. Being at the top doesn’t happen overnight or in a short period of time, it takes commitment, hard work and dedication and it has been an honour to make history with this incredible team,” added Hamilton to Wolff.
“I grew up with this team back in 2017 when I joined as part of the junior program. It’s my home and it’s fantastic that we can extend our special relationship into 2025,” said Russell.
Current position
Mercedes is currently facing the Italian Grand Prix, where its drivers will be looking to challenge for the podium. As far as the current position in the Constructors’ Cup is concerned, Mercedes is currently in second place with 255 points.
As for the Drivers’ Championship, Hamilton is currently fourth, having accumulated 156 points so far. Russell is in seventh position with 99 points.
