Immortal Ibrahimovic! Swedish football icon rewrites Serie A record, beats legendary Costacurta with his goal

AC Milan travelled to Udinese Calcio on Saturday for the 27th round of Serie A, losing 1:3. The Rossoneri can find one positive news, however, in the form of Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s individual record. The Swedish football icon has become the oldest goalscorer in the history of the Italian league.

AC Milan have not had a good game. And not only that, the last three league rounds. First, Stefano Pioli’s charges lost to Fiorentina, then they only drew with Salernitana at home and the very last time they fell short to Udinese.

The latter surprisingly took the lead in the ninth minute when Roberto Pereyra scored with a shot to the left post.

The Rossoneri were only able to equalise in injury time of the first half when the referee, thanks to a video review, awarded a penalty to the away side. Ibrahimovic initially missed his first attempt, but VAR subsequently decided to replay the penalty kick.

One of the home team’s players had run out much earlier, breaking the rules and Ibrahimovic had another attempt. And he was not wrong the second time.

The ageless Swedish forward scored his 156th goal in the Italian top flight, equalling the feat of current Italy coach Roberto Mancini. Zlatan, however, made Italian football history with another feat.

He became the oldest goalscorer in the history of the Italian league with his penalty, at 41 years and 166 days. Ibrahimovic thus surpassed another AC Milan player, Alessandro Costacurta, who had held the record since 2007.

However, the Rossoneri scored once more before going into the booths when Beto scored in the sixth minute.

Goalkeeper Mike Maignan then fished the ball out of the net in the second half, with Kingsley Ehizibue upping the score to 3-1 in the 70th minute. AC simply couldn’t handle the game and took another loss. They are currently fourth in Serie A with 48 points, two points behind Inter in third and one point behind AS Roma in fifth.
