Croatia have a very important game in their Euro 2024 qualification when they face Wales.
However, in the pre-match press conference, apart from questions about the upcoming duel, Modric also had to answer what he said about the interest from Saudi Arabia.
This is because the Croatian midfielder’s current contract at Real Madrid expires at the end of June this year. The Spanish media is thus speculating about his departure to Qatar or Saudi Arabia, but Modric has been clear on the subject.
I’m getting tired of it!
“I stand by what I said. I have said it many times and I am tired of it. But my wish is known and I believe it will be. I want to stay at Real Madrid. The latter is speculation by the writing (journalists) that I cannot refute. I know they have to write something, but I hope to stay at Real Madrid,” Modric said clearly at a press conference, whose words were quoted by Croatian daily Dnevnik.
According to the aforementioned Croatian server, the Spanish media also allegedly spread false information that Real Madrid is conditioning Modric on a new contract if he stops playing for the Croatian national team.
However, the Croatian captain replied in no uncertain terms that this information is indeed nonsense. “In short and clearly, no (he does not)!”
At the press conference, Modric was also asked whether it was possible for him to end both his club and national team career at the same time.
“That would be ideal, but we will see what happens. I like football a lot, I enjoy it and that’s one of the reasons why I last so long. Football is everything to me. Family is the most important thing, but this is also what makes me happy and fulfilled,” the Zadar native added.
