There was an interesting heavyweight clash at the weekend’s PFL Overseas Gala. Not only were there more rounds of the million dollar pyramid within this weight class, but there was a huge backstage encounter. In fact, Francis Ngannou and Jon Jones came face to face during the tournament. And the two heavyweight titans certainly had a lot to talk about.

The PFL gala offered some great fights in the cage and an interesting clash outside the octagon

A fight that stirs the passions. A clash of the titans! It was supposed to be the biggest heavyweight fight possible under the wings of the biggest MMA organization possible, but unfortunately it didn’t happen in the end, leaving the battle for the king of the division still wide open.

Over the weekend, another Professional Fighters League gala took place in Atlanta, Georgia, where the final fights of the Million Dollar Pyramid were fought. In addition to the women’s featherweight division, the tournament also offered another round of men’s heavyweight action.

As is often the case with the heavyweight division, the bouts offered several first round knockouts. The inset lightweight bout also brought a lot of fan interest, as the grandson of boxing legend Muhammad Ali, Biaggio Ali Walsh, scored his third straight KO in the organization.

However, the huge excitement of the fans present was also brought by the “fight” outside the cage, which took place between the true champions of the field. Longtime UFC heavyweight ruler Francis Ngannou exchanged a few words with the legendary Jon Jones.

The two men have made some verbal exchanges over their social networks in the past, and it was long overdue for a fight. However, the Cameroonian predator failed to agree to a contract extension with Dana White earlier this year and when Jones returned to the cage after three years, Ngannou was no longer with the organization.

Now they were face to face in a PFL event and it made for an interesting spectacle. “Respect,” Ngannou spoke words of appreciation to his star rival, to which Jones responded in equal measure.

“We have to make this fight,” Ngannou insisted, whereupon Jones began to size him up.

“Francis, you know you don’t want this smoke. With the one true king. I’ve been the only true king since I started this. And I will die a king,” the American warrior replied with a smile. “Maybe in your division, in the heavyweight division, I am the king,” Ngannou was not intimidated.

“We shall see. We could have seen it, but you left,” Jones replied, but Ngannou retorted if it took him three years to put on weight. “I had to put on weight to kick your ass,” the legendary American joked.

Words also came out about the Cameroonian champion’s departure from the UFC. “Don’t let the system get to you. Keep playing your game, not theirs,” Ngannou reminded his rival of his difficult contract negotiations with the management of the biggest MMA organization in the world.

“I’ve always wanted to fight you, but it’s nothing personal. I just want to kick your ass,” Ngannou said in closing. “Francis, if you want to kick my ass, you need to learn wrestling and jiu-jitsu. And that’s gonna take you more than a year, ” Jones concluded.

A rematch is out of the question for at least the near term, as Jones is reportedly facing a UFC title defense, while Ngannou recently signed with the rival PFL. Still, their encounter sparked electrifying emotions from MMA fans.
