The final of the US Open, the last Grand Slam tournament of 2022, will be between Iga Swiatek and Ons Jabeur. It will be a battle between the first and fifth seeds, in which the Polish player should have the upper hand. But can she confirm her role as the paper favourite on the court?
Iga Swiatek is a 21-year-old tennis player from Poland. Despite her young age, she is the world number one, with a lead of almost 5000 points at the top of the WTA rankings. Her ranking is mainly due to 2022, in which she won an incredible 56 matches. She has only found an opponent on seven occasions.
At the US Open, she successively defeated Paolini, Stephens, Davis, Niemeier, Pegula and Sabalenka. On her way to the finals, the Pole lost two sets, each time it was the first set of the match.
Her opponent on Saturday will be seven years older Ons Jabeur. The Tunisian is currently ranked fifth in the WTA rankings. However, it is already certain that she will move up to the second position in Monday’s edition of the rankings, thus improving her career high.
The winner of tournaments in Madrid or Berlin is in great form at the US Open. Even the three American players, who had a huge home crowd advantage, couldn’t find a recipe for her. They were Brengle, Mandlik and Rogers. Only the latter managed to take the match to the third set.
She managed the following matches with Kudermetova, Tomljanovic and Garcia without much difficulty. Moreover, she also showed great mental resilience in them, as she managed to win two tiebreakers.
However, in the final, she will undoubtedly face the best tennis player on the WTA circuit. Although the balance of their matches is even (2: 2), the Polish player dominated the last match with ease (6: 2 and 6: 2). We can expect Swiatek to win the US Open final as well.
