If Liverpool don’t bring in a midfielder, they have no chance of Top 4, thinks Reds icon

Liverpool put two blown out post-Christmas wins behind them on Monday, going down 1-3 at Brentford. Fans are clamouring for reinforcements, especially in the midfield. Club icon Jamie Carragher is of the same opinion.

Liverpool put the two wins from last weekend behind them on Monday, going down 1: 3 at Brentford.Fans are clamouring for reinforcements, especially in the midfield. Club icon Jamie Carragher is of the same opinion.

Liverpool haven’t commanded much respect since Sadio Mané’s departure. Last year it was fighting with Manchester City for the title until the last round, now after 17 rounds it is already 15 points behind the sixth place leader Arsenal.

He has already lost to Leeds and even Nottingham, who were winless and clearly last at the time, in the season. Both games were full of battles and it was no different on Monday at Brentford, where the Reds fell 1: 3.

“Liverpool have had trouble all season against teams that are physically built. Let’s not forget that this is a team that prides itself on intensity being its identity. At the moment it doesn’t match that. They look like an ageing team hurtling towards the end,” Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports.

Jurgen Klopp made excuses for the head referee’s performance at the press conference, on the other hand Liverpool gave perhaps the worst performance in the history of football in defending centres. He got two goals from them, plus two more disallowed for offside.

At the same time, the centre of midfield was not working. Harvey Elliott, Thiago Alcantara and Fabinho (who is not expected to do so, of course) did not do anything clever and the slow pace of the game was not changed for the better by substitutes Naby Keita and Curtis Jones.

“I don’t know what happened to Liverpool’s midfield. He bought one midfielder in four and a half years, Thiago Alcantara. Now they are getting it back,” the former Liverpool player continued.

Liverpool are indeed lacking midfielders, especially a real top ten. Harvey Elliott is undoubtedly talented, but he’s third, maybe second choice. Plus, he’s not a player who can be expected to contribute a goal in every game.

In November, many were surprised by the omission of Thiago from Luis Enrique’s Spanish national team nomination for the World Cup in Qatar. But now it turns out that the experienced coach had his reasons. Thiago should be a leader, even given his experience, but he is not.

“They signed Cody Gakpo. If Liverpool think they can get into the top four without signing a midfielder in this window, they have no chance,” Carragher added.
