Stachowiak didn’t celebrate the victory against his home country too much
In 1999, Wojciech Stachowiak was born in Gdansk, Poland. He was a figure skater from a young age, then tried ice hockey at the age of 11, and stayed with it. He tried out for Poland in a tournament in the Czech Republic and got an offer from Germany.
Stachowiak was scouted by a hockey team from Weisswasser and the move was made. He accepted the offer from Germany also because several Poles were already working there.
He played his last national team game for Poland when he was 15 years old: ”There were a few things that prevented me from playing for the Polish national team. I got a chance to play for the German national team and it stayed that way.”
The Polish striker played for Germany at last year’s championship, where he contributed to the silver medals. Stachowiak notched two goals and four assists.
“Last year we surprised everyone, but this year we won’t surprise anyone. We’re already countedon, ” he said of the current tournament, where Germany has won four times and fallen only to Sweden and the USA.
Stachowiak hasn’t scored any goals at this year’s World Cup. But instead he shines as a playmaker, having already made five passes for his German teammates that have led to goals. However, he did not score in Sunday’s game against Poland.
Germany still won 4-2 and moved closer to reaching the quarter-finals. Poland remains in last place in Group B with one point, just two points behind second-to-last-placed Kazakhstan. The Kazakhs have a game in hand, but they play against the USA.
It looks very likely that the last match will decide who will stay in the elite group for the World Cup. The Poles will challenge Kazakhstan. ”I really want the Poles to stay in,” Stachowiak said.
