I prefer to stay in England, there were some offers, says injured Vydra

Czech footballer Matej Vydra’s contract at Burnley expires at the end of June and he will become a free agent. He ended his four-year journey in the Premier League with an injury that kept him out for the last few rounds, so he couldn’t help the team save itself.
Vydra strengthened Burnley in the summer of 2018, the club paid 12 million euros for him, yet in the opening season of the Premier League he only got into the game thirteen times. Sean Dyche preferred tidy strikers, with the typologically different Vydra only coming on from the bench.
Even in the following three seasons, the national striker did not get over 50 percent of the possible minutes played. Several times he wanted to go on loan, but the management kept him because they had no other mobile forward on the roster. When his contract ended this year, he was unluckily injured.
“When my contract was coming to an end, which actually happens in seven days, my eyes would always light up, telling me that it’s over, that maybe I’ll go somewhere for free. And then came the worst thing that can happen to a de facto free agent, ” Vydra told iSport.
The cruciate ligament injury was symbolically caused by Vydra against Watford, in whose jersey he spent the best part of his career. He scored 35 goals and assisted 15 in 98 games, and was even named the best player in the entire EFL Championship in the 2012/2013 season.
Now he could have played in his favourite second English league with Burnley, but they refused to renew his contract. The club needs to get rid of Premier League wages as quickly as possible, with mainstays Ben Mee and James Tarkowski leaving, while Nick Pope has already signed at Newcastle. And Vydra will become a free agent.
“When the injury happened they told me they didn’t want to leave me in the situation. The season didn’t end the way everyone probably wanted it to. After all, some seven rounds before the end they fired Sean Dyche. Burnley were looking for a coach for the new season, somehow it dragged on, so they probably had other worries than me,” continued the national striker.
For Vydra, the situation is even more complicated because his contract expires when he is injured. Under different circumstances, he would be interested in the Championship, but this way it will be much harder to find a new contract.
In the past, there was speculation about Sparta buying him, but with the transfer of Jan Kuchta, that option has probably fallen through. The most probable option is to stay in the British Isles, ideally in the second league, where Vydra has not lost his Watford or Derby County jersey.
“I preferred to stay in England. There have been some offers, I don’t know what specifically. I’m never that interested because until the papers are on the table with a concrete offer, they are just enquiries. But there were some from America, from England, from Germany, Turkey and the Czech Republic,” Vydra said.
