Sheriff Tiraspol couldn’t repeat the performance from last season, when they beat the famous Real in the Champions League group stage and fell to Viktoria 1: 2 in both matches.
Michal Bilek’s team is now assured of the Europa League group stage and if they manage to knock out Karabakh, there will be even more joy in Pilsen as the Champions League money will flow into the coffers.
“I don’t want to compare it to anything, but it’s one of my biggest achievements. We’ve come a long way already, but we still have two games to go and we’re still fighting for the Champions League. Theopponent confirmed his quality today, so it’s a very valuable victory,” Bílek said at the press conference.
Viktoria took the lead in the first half thanks to Jan Kliment, but then Tomas Chorý missed a penalty and when the equaliser came, some fans were worried. But in the end, Jhon Mosquera added his team’s second goal.
“It was a huge nervous moment for the whole 90 minutes. In the first half we didn’t allow our opponents any significant chances, but after the unlucky penalty that came very early in the second half, those moments were the worst. It wasonly when we scored the leading and decisive goal that we started to breathe a bit better,” he added.
The group stage of the Champions League is very important, and for that reason it is now difficult to focus on the league again, where Viktoria will head to Mladá Boleslav to take on Slavia’s conqueror Hradec Kralove.
