I don’t understand what PSG is doing. They have the best player in the world and they want to play without him. Mbappé must stay, says Paris mayor
Kylian Mbappé is once again the number one topic all summer. His (non-)departure from PSG is being discussed on all fronts and even in politics. Even the mayor of Paris has weighed in on the French football star.
Kylian Mbappé is once again the number one topic all summer. His (non-)departure from PSG is being discussed on all fronts and even in politics. Even the mayor of Paris has weighed in on the French football star.
Mbappé’s influence on PSG and French football is so great that it even extends into the political sphere. When he was deciding a year ago whether to sign a new contract in Paris or leave for Real Madrid, he received a call not only from Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the ruler of Qatar, but from someone even more influential.
Mbappé received a phone call from Emmanuel Macron, the president of France, begging him to stay at PSG. So much does he value the 24-year-old star that even the president is begging him to stay in Paris.
Under pressure, one of the best footballers in the world finally decided to stay in Paris, but he only signed a two-year contract. After one season, he made it clear that he would not renew his contract and would like to leave next season for free.
But PSG logically doesn’t like that, as they would not only lose a fat transfer fee, but would also have to pay the player a loyalty bonus of 100 million euros. So they decided to give the player an ultimatum – sign a new contract or leave.
As a means of enforcement, it chose to skip the pre-season tour of Japan. But this was not met with sympathy on all sides in the land of the Gallic cock.
“I don’t understand what kind of game PSG is playing with Mbappé. They have the best player in the world and are willing to play without him. I admit I don’t understand anything,” said Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo in a television interview on gala station BFM.
“It is necessary to keep him in Paris,” the mayor added confidently. But that seems impossible at the moment. Al-Hilal yesterday revealed an offer for Mbappé that amounts to an astronomical 700 million euros per year.
But the player is reportedly refusing a move to Saudi Arabia and only wants to go to Real Madrid. The problem, however, is that relations between the two clubs are at a standstill and neither president wants to make the first move. The transfer could easily drag on until the end of August.
