I don’t mind criticism and big claims. I made mistakes at Inter too in the beginning, but Manchester United is a bigger club, says Onana

André Onana transferred from Inter Milan to Manchester United last July and is the clear number one in the Red Devils’ goal after the departure of David de Gea. However, he was heavily criticised by the fans at the start of his engagement, but he is used to high expectations.
The Cameroon international was one of Manchester United’s biggest signings in 2023, as they sent over €50 million to the Italian big club for him. However, especially during his start in a Red Devils jersey, Onana was heavily criticized for his ability.
Not seen by fans as an adequate replacement for De Gea, Onana made many mistakes in goal. The Cameroonian goalkeeper thus bears part of the responsibility for Manchester United’s poor results. Erik ten Hag’s charges are currently seventh in the Premier League table.
In addition, the English giant was eliminated from the Champions League group stage, having failed to beat Galatasaray or FC Copenhagen.
Onana has so far played 28 competitive matches for the Manchester side, keeping eight clean sheets and scoring 45 times.
However, he doesn’t admit too much criticism on his person. According to his words in an interview with Sky Sport Italia, he experienced something similar at the beginning of his engagement at Inter. He eventually became the best goalkeeper in the Champions League in the 2022/23 season and contributed significantly to the Nerazzurri’s progress to the final.
Onana: Manchester United is a bigger club
“It’s too big a dream. I come from a humble family, we had almost nothing. I started playing with my friends in Cameroon and I didn’t expect to have such a career. I am proud to represent Manchester United and wear this jersey,” Onana said in an interview with Sky Sports Italia, whose words are also quoted by Football Italia.
“People have high expectations of me, that’s why they criticised me a lot. It’s not a problem for me, I’m used to it. In the beginning, people criticised me at Inter and it ended up being our eternal love,” the Cameroonian goalkeeper continued.
“But Manchester United is a bigger club and people have big expectations. I am sure that if we do things right, fortune will soon smile on us. We have to stand on our feet and get good results,” he concluded.
