I don’t like playing left-back, says Camavinga. But if the club needs it, I’ll get in there

Eduardo Camavinga is one of the brightest football talents in the world. The speed with which he has caught on at Real Madrid at just 18 years old is breathtaking. Carlo Ancelotti wants him in the line-up at all costs, which sometimes means relegating him to left-back, something the Frenchman doesn’t like.

Eduardo Camavinga came to Real Madrid as a great talent. In his first year he filled more of a joker role, but he had a huge impact on turning games around. In the Champions League playoffs, for example, he played great games against PSG, Chelsea and Manchester City.

In the new season he started to push much more in the starting line-up, but the competition from Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Aurélien Tchouaméni and Federico Valverde was not easy. Even so, the young Frenchman started to start more and more often from the beginning.

During the spring, however, the only left back in the team, Ferland Mendy, got injured and Carlo Ancelotti resorted to a desperate solution – he pulled the Camaving midfielder at left-back and, to everyone’s surprise, the Cabinda native performed fantastically.

He stayed in that position during the spring and featured in the vast majority of games. But in the summer, the club brought in Fran García to solve that problem. Camavinga returned to the midfield, where competition was further increased with the arrival of Bellingham, but Real started to play with four midfielders and Ancelotti also dropped Modric and Kroos a bit.

Thus, the quartet of youngsters Tchouaméni – Camavinga – Valverde – Bellingham was the most frequent in the beginning of the season. However, the pair of veterans showed that they are still not old hands, especially Kroos with his great performances asked for a return to the starting line-up.

When García was not giving an ideal performance, Ancelotti resorted to a radical solution. He brought back Camavinga at left-back, who played great games against Girona and Napoli.

“I think everyone knows that it’s no secret that I don’t like this position. I spoke to Ancelotti, but the most important thing is the team. Since I am a team player, I will play as a left-back if they ask me to, even if I don’t like it. But I want to give my all for the club, you don’t always get what you want, you have to be able to balance things,” Camavinga said at France’s national team meeting on the left-back question.
