I always fight to the end! Rune beats Dimitrov and looks to fight for the king of the next generation at Wimbledon
Holger Rune, after a great fight, has made it to the Wimbledon quarter-finals against Bulgarian Dimitrov. There he will face a very tough opponent, but he will certainly not be limited by fears. On the contrary, the Danish tennis player’s set-up promises another battle for every ball.
Holger Rune, after a great fight, has made it to the Wimbledon quarter-finals against Bulgarian Dimitrov. There he will face a very tough opponent, but he will certainly not be limited by fears. On the contrary, the Danish tennis player’s set-up promises another battle for every ball.
The eight-final match between Holger Run and Grigor Dimitrov was the highlight of Monday’s programme at the All England Club. For a long time, the experienced Bulgarian tennis player was pulling the longer side of the rope. He won the first set and had a break lead in the second set.
But the 20-year-old Dane managed to come back in the second set and eventually won it in a tiebreak. From then on, both players served brilliantly and only one loss of serve came in the rest of the match.
The third one had to be decided in a shortened game and Rune scored again. The last break of the match was won by the Dane in the sixth game of the fourth set and soon afterwards he left the court as the winner.
“I always fight until the end,” he said after the match and he translated these words into reality in the match against Dimitrov. After 3:6, 7:6, 7:6, 6:3 sets, he will face the quarter-final against the world number one.
Quarterfinal match
The Danish tennis player will therefore challenge Alcaraz in the quarterfinals. The 20-year-old tennis players are separated by only six days in the birth column and five places in the ATP rankings. Rune is looking forward to the match.
Both players had very little experience on grass courts before this season due to their youth and both are doing damn well on it this year. Alcaraz hasn’t known the bitterness of defeat in nine matches on the fastest surface and Rune has won eight of the same number of matches.
At Wimbledon, both young tennis players have already surpassed their previous bests. In Rune’s case, it was almost an obligation. Last year, on his Wimbledon debut here, he finished in the first round.
Rune has played Alcaraz twice in his career, each tennis player winning one of those duels. Neither of those matches, however, were quite the standard affair.
Alcaraz dominated their matchup at the Next Gen ATP Finals played in shorter sets. Rune’s winning match was not finished as Alcaraz had to call it quits in the tiebreak of the second set.
Let’s hope that Wednesday’s duel between the players of the upcoming generation will be finished by the end. In terms of tennis quality and commitment, tennis fans cannot be expected to be disappointed.
The next opponent of the winner of this clash will be determined by the result of the American-Russian duel, in which Daniil Medvedev will face a surprising opponent. That will be Christopher Eubanks.
