The Group G rematch between Hungary and Serbia is scheduled for today. The two teams met in qualifying just a month ago and will face each other again today. Given the position in the table and the home environment, Hungary will be a slight favourite.
The home team played their last international match against the Czech Republic, a 1-1 draw in Prague, with arguably Hungary’s biggest star Dominik Szoboszlai coming through. On the other hand, the Serbians took on Lithuania in their last qualifying match when Mitrovic scored a hat-trick in the first half.
The biggest stars
As already mentioned, the biggest star of the home team is definitely Dominik Szoboszlai, the midfielder wearing the Liverpool jersey, where he transferred from Leipzig in the summer. He immediately established himself in the starting line-up of the team from Anfield and seems to be irreplaceable for Klopp.
The biggest star of Serbia could be debated for a long time. Is it Aleksandar Mitrovic? Milinkovic-Savic? Or even Dusan Vlahovic? The list of offensive aces at Serbia’s disposal is wide, the question is how they get along with each other and how they carry their role in the team.
For today’s game, the first two will carry the star status. They play together in Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal and thus have a perfect chemistry between them. Milinkovic-Savic scored 2 goals in the last game. Dusan Vlahovic didn’t play in the last two Juventus games due to injury, so he can’t intervene in this “fight”.
Situation in the group
The clash between the two favourites of Group G will probably decide the winner of this qualifying group tonight, the winner will also be able to enter the final stage of the qualification with more peace of mind and a point gap to third-placed Montenegro.
Hungary are currently in first place, having one game less and only lost points in their draw with Montenegro. Serbia is in second place with the same number of points as Hungary, apart from losing just to today’s opponent, they surprisingly drew with Bulgaria and Lazovic saved at least a point in the sixth minute of the second half setup.
This is the fourth mutual match since 2020, with Hungary enjoying two wins, Serbia once and the two teams tied once. An interesting fact, especially for bettors, is that the home team has never won and the odds look accordingly.
