Formula 1 had a qualifying session today for its sixth race of the season, the Monaco Grand Prix. And it was certainly something to watch. Sergio Pérez crashed early on in this Saturday’s action, and then we saw an absolute heart attack. Finally, on Sunday, Max Verstappen will start from pole position.

The first part of qualifying was a dramatic spectacle right from the start. Sergio Pérez failed to make it through the first corner, which significantly damaged his Red Bull monopod and he could not intervene in the further course of Q1.

In any case, as far as the other retirements are concerned, Q1 didn’t really bring any surprising results. Zhou Kuan-yu, Nico Hülkenberg, Kevin Magnussen and Logan Sargeant also failed to qualify from the first act.

Max Verstappen dominated the first qualifying segment with a time of 1:12.386 ahead of Júki Cunoda and Alexander Albon.

The second part of qualifying

In Q2, the spectators saw several barrier contacts directly in Monaco, but also on the TV screens. However, this just goes to show that the drivers really drove with an edge on this city circuit, which they proved even more in the third act.

Cunoda locked his wheels on his quick attempt, preventing contact with the wall. However, Esteban Ocon and Lando Norris did not escape the impact, with the latter suffering damage to his monoposto.

However, Valtteri Bottas, Lance Stroll, Albon, Nyck de Vries and Oscar Piastri failed to qualify for the last part of qualifying with their times.

Big drama in Q3!

Norris’s car, however, was fixed by McLaren mechanics and he was able to take part in Q3. The latter brought huge drama as the biggest favourites of the qualifying session set one breathtaking time after another.

With just a few seconds to go, Fernando Alonso led the way with his amazing time, but it was Max Verstappen who eventually took pole position.

He set a time of 1:11.365 in his last quick attempt and will start Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix from pole position. The second fastest time was set by the legendary Spaniard Alonso, who lost only 84 thousandths of a second to the reigning world champion.

Charles Leclerc will line up on the second row and Esteban Ocon, who even attacked pole position for a while with his time of 1:11.553, will line up fourth. There were indeed several names in the top spot in the final minutes of Q3.

Lewis Hamilton, who was also on course for a great result during Q3, will take the sixth starting slot in Monaco. Pierre Gasly finished seventh, George Russell takes eighth, Cunoda ninth and Norris rounds out the elite ten at the start of the Monaco VC.
