Real bad luck! Slovan Bratislava was leading 2:0 in the rematch with Basel in the European Conference League, but lost the favorable result and after the equalizer the match went to penalty kicks, where the guests were the luckier team.
The opening match was played in Switzerland and ended in a 2: 2 draw, so Belasí brought home a promising result heading into the rematch.
21,675 spectators came to Tehelné Pole, with the vast majority of them supporting the home side towards their historic success in European Cups.
The match looked really promising, however, in the 11th minute Malik Abubakari sent Slovan into the lead with a header that beat goalkeeper Marwin Hitz.
The stadium erupted into celebrations in the 17th minute when Juraj Kucka increased the Belasí lead. Everything was pointing towards progress, but the opposite was true.
The visitors reduced the deficit in the 53rd minute from Riccardo Calafiori’s kick, and then in the 93rd minute Zeki Amdouni cooled the Slovan fans with a shot from mid-range.
The match went into extra time and the psychological advantage was on the side of the Swiss guests. This was finally confirmed in the penalty kicks.
On Slovan’s side, the first attempt was missed by Kucka, the second penalty was missed by Tigran Barseghyan, and even though Lucas Lovat converted the third one, Basel made no mistake and could rejoice.
In Bratislava, on the other hand, there was great sadness, after all, the promotion was really close. Instead, Slovan bid farewell to this year’s European Conference League.
