Roman Rogoz is one of the main figures in the bribery scandal in Czech football that broke out last October. Thanks to his friendship with Roman Berber, the former sporting director of Vyšehrad got the Prague club into the second league. Thanks to a preview of the police file, server Aktuálně describes how it went down in the spring of 2019.
When the experienced arrow Rogoz came to Vyšehrad, he had a clear goal. To get the Šemiks into the second league. Not when he had so much support behind him. Roman Berbr, the most powerful boss in Czech football, called him “son,” and Jozef Chovanec, the head of the referees’ committee, was one of his best friends. It’s easy to arrange results then.
Anyone who watched Vyšehrad in the 2018/19 season must have known something was wrong. The team of coaches Roman Vesely and Oldřich Pařízek played penalties almost regularly, scoring a goal here and there from a metre offside, almost every game the other team complained after. In vain.
Roman Rogoz, nicknamed “the butcher”, was behind everything. During his engagement in České Budějovice and especially in Příbram, he made a lot of friends and contacts, which came in handy.
It was a common practice that Rogoz called Berbr before a Vyšehrad match, asked him to “manipulate” the referee, Berbr arranged it at the union and Rogoz could go into action. Before the Slavoj match he had a meeting with the referees, where he handed over a bribe and ensured Vyšehrad’s victory.
On May 4, 2019 at 8:30 a.m., Rogoz met for breakfast at the Pyramida Hotel with the trio of referees Ladislav Benedikt, Tomas Tesar and Vaclav Nemec, who would be officiating Vyšehrad’s match against Brozany in a few hours.
“How many times have you been here at Vyšehrad?” Rogoz asks Tesar. “To the artist. About two or three times, ” the referee replies. “But not since I’ve been here?” says Rogoz. The carpenter shakes his head no, whereupon the arrow replies. So you should step, um, you know, like…”
“Victoriously,” adds the Carpenter. “Victorious, right. Dude, why bother. Are you sleepy or something?” Rogoz doesn’t understand. At least he was happy with the result, when Vyšehrad crushed Brozany 7:1.
Another way to manipulate the match without any traces was to forget the camera. All CFL matches are regularly broadcast online by TVCOM.cz and the home team is obliged to provide a camera.
But before the match against Ústí nad Orlicí, a gang of mocipans had an idea how to get around it. Vyšehrad did not play the game at Strahov, where they used to play their home games, but in Horní Počernice at Xaverov. Michal Káník, who was Rogoz’s right-hand man, handed over a bribe of 30,000 to the main referee Tomáš Grimm to influence the match in Vyšehrad’s favour.
And it was this referee who got the idea to come out of everything with a clean slate. So he called Rogoz and told him that the change of venue didn’t take place until 6pm and everything was so rushed that something might not go 100% right.
“If someone forgot some important equipment at Strahov, it’s easy to justify. They start moving things at 6 pm, so it could happen that the projector was left locked somewhere because it didn’t make it,” Grimm exhorts Rogoz in a phone call.
Rogoz likes this idea very much and immediately pisses off club manager Miroslav Tander.
“Milan, one more thing. How can I tell you… It’s a lot of stuff we have to carry for the game tomorrow. So I think you won’t be able to bring the video camera,” Rogoz says on the phone.
“I’ve got everything in the car,” replies Tandera, the manager.
“No, you’re not gonna make it. You won’t be able to get the projector or the video camera, ” Rogoz says. “Yeah, like that, I know. Yes, I’ll do it, I like that kind of job,” Tandera replies with a laugh.
Vyšehrad defeats Ústí nad Orlicí 2: 0. You can find countless matches manipulated in the 2018/19 season in Vyšehrad’s favour. The Shemis did indeed advance to the FNL then, but they lasted only two seasons and were relegated to the CFL again.
And they are still facing worse things. Vyšehrad will face punishment from the FAČR and as a club they are threatened with relegation to the Prague league.
