Football can be a very tough sport and Antonio Rüdiger found out on Wednesday. The Real Madrid stopper has a facial laceration that had to be stitched up with 20 stitches after a clash with the Shakhtar goalkeeper. The club has now shown how such stitching took place.
It was the 95th minute of the duel between Shakhtar and Real Madrid. Toni Kroos’ last-ditch centre into the whitewash found Rüdiger, who leapt and placed the ball in the net with a header. But the run was not well calculated by goalkeeper Trubin and the German stopper was cruelly brought down.
The bloodied stopper had to be treated immediately and although he wanted to finish the match, the doctors did not allow him to enter the pitch. He was immediately taken to the cabin where he was attended by the club doctors.
And you can be there, thanks to the Real Madrid cameras. A concerned David Alaba came to see his teammate and asked him how he was doing.
“Everything is fine, it’s just torn. My head doesn’t hurt. I’m an ugly bro anyway,” Rüdiger quipped in German.
Other teammates Toni Kroos, Lucas Vázquez and David Alaba came to watch their teammate and sat by Rüdiger throughout the stitching. When Luka Modric walked in and saw how big Rüdiger’s shot was, he just screamed in horror.
20 stitches
At the end of the video, the doctor was also interviewed and clarified Rüdiger’s situation.
“We stitched it up. We had to do stitches inside because he had damaged the subcutaneous connective tissue of the frontal muscle. Then we did intradermal stitches to try to keep the scar as small as possible,” the Real Madrid doctor explained.
“It was an intradermal suture, it was equivalent to practically 20 stitches,” the doctor explained. Importantly, however, Rüdiger should not have fractured any facial bones. Definitive tests should take place after his return to Madrid, but initial indications are positive.
It is not yet known whether Rüdiger will be able to start in Sunday’s El Clásico against Barcelona. A mask game is in the cards, but it is unclear whether he will be able to make all the arrangements in time. After all, creating such a customized mask is not easy, it takes some time.
