The pandemic and the closure of football stadiums is certainly not good for football clubs’ budgets, so financial resources have to be found elsewhere. For the Czech giants, the most lucrative source is of course participation in the European Cup.
Clubs receive funding for qualifying for the regular part of any European competition and then money can be generated for results. Every competition from the Champions League to the lowest performing European Conference League has a table of amounts that clubs can earn for a draw or a win.
Of course, in the Champions League these rewards are the highest, in the Europa League and the Conference League the income is also different, but there is not such a marked difference.
One of the leading supporters of Prague Slavia, after advancing to the spring part of the ECL, started calculations. Slavia won twice, drew twice and lost twice in the group. So how much is that approximately?
It is something around 158 million crowns. That’s about the same amount Slavia cashed in for the transfer of Vladimir Coufal to West Ham or the sale of David Zima to Torino FC.
The rival Sparta, thanks to their participation in the Europa League and promotion (relegation) to the ECL, according to available sources, earned about 50 million crowns more (about €2 million).
It won’t be a rich Christmas for Prague’s “S”, but both clubs can improve their economic balance in the spring. The upcoming draw will be a big hint.
