The year 2021 in the national team environment is in the spirit of the start of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, but the main event of the year was the Euro football tournament. The Czech national football team presented itself in a great light. They advanced from the group and were not far from the semi-finals! How did this sensational journey pay off economically?
The tough group with England, Croatia and Scotland was not as difficult for the Czech Republic as many had expected. We slipped through to the eighth round from third place and were the underdogs against the Netherlands.
However, despite the Oranjes, the Czech team managed to advance to the quarterfinals, where our representatives were no match for the strong Danes. Sportingly, Czech football surprised and was competitive.
UEFA rewarded the FAČR with CZK 441 million. An astronomical sum for an ordinary mortal, isn’t it? But contrast it with the income of the world’s stars, who earn the same amount in a single season, and some even more.
It should also be noted that the FAČR had high costs for the whole tournament. Which means that the final profit from the whole event is much lower.
Think of the arduous travel and flights across Europe. The total cost of the EURO, including the remuneration for the whole team, is 381 million CZK.
That leaves only 60 million of the relatively high total prize money. The other sixty million should go towards funding the youth national teams.
