How many millions will Barcelona lose if relegated to the Europa League?
Barcelona on Wednesday night is playing for a lot on the sporting field. But at the same time, it’s also on the financial one. Because if they don’t qualify for the Champions League eight-finals but are relegated to the Europa League, they will lose a lot of money.
Barcelona on Wednesday night is playing for a lot on the sporting field. But at the same time, it’s also on the financial one. Because if they don’t qualify for the Champions League eight-finals but are relegated to the Europa League, they will lose a lot of money.
All Catalans and Barcelona fans around the world are praying to the goddess Victoria on Wednesday night. Or more accurately, to Victoria Pilsen. The latter must not lose to Inter Milan or Barcelona will be eliminated from the Champions League for the second year in a row.
In addition to sporting ambitions and prestige, the financial side of the club would suffer. Barcelona, like every year, when planning its pre-season budget, was counting on reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
However, if they are eliminated in the group stage, they will not be able to get this money from UEFA. According to MARCA, Barcelona would lose €20 million. It could get something back in the Europa League, but even if it wins that competition, it would not get that amount.
The club’s economic vice-president Eduard Romeu said at the club’s last socios assembly that dropping out in the Champions League group stage last year cost Barcelona 12 million euros.
If it happened again this year, the impact would be roughly similar. But the problem is not just the one-off contribution to Barcelona’s cabinet. Some sponsors also give money to the club based on their success in the Champions League and logically want them to go as far as possible. In the final, their brand or company is the most visible.
The Blaugranas will also lose some of the sponsors’ money and make it harder for them to negotiate with potential other sponsors.
A second consecutive relegation to the Europa League could thus amount to a disaster. Let’s not forget that Barcelona sold off part of the club to bring in reinforcements to help it succeed and especially to make more money from the cups.
