Erling Haaland hasn’t even made his official Manchester City debut yet and already his departure from the Etihad Stadium is being discussed. A report has emerged that the Norwegian marksman has a €150 million buyout clause in his contract.
Manchester City unveiled a new signing in the week, buying superstar Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund for €60 million. The sharpshooter is expected to help them reach their dream Champions League.
But how many attempts will he have? German newspaper BILD has reported that Haaland’s agency has negotiated a €150 million buyout clause with Manchester City. So whoever comes and puts that amount on the table, the Citizens management will have no power to prevent the transfer. The clause will be activated after two seasons, in 2024.
Mino Raiola, the late Haaland’s deputy, took the same approach for the transfer to Dortmund. When he arrived from Salzburg, he had a €75 million buy-out clause included in his contract, which was activated this summer.
It’s a bit of an insurance policy, if Haaland wants to take the next step in his career or is not happy at the team, the club cannot stop him from leaving. And that is exactly what Real Madrid are already planning to do, according to the Spanish media.
The latter was also interested in Haaland this summer and according to several newspapers the player himself preferred a transfer to Spain. However, with the Benzema-Vinicci duo on the move and Mbappé coming in, it would be unrealistic to fit Haaland into the line-up.
So Florentino Pérez came up with a plan. Benzema is out of contract next year, but he is arguably the best player in the world at the moment and will probably win the Ballon d’Or. So Real are going to extend the 34-year-old striker’s contract for another year, until the summer of 2024.
And that’s when Haaland’s buyout clause will be activated. Pérez will thus try to bring in the 21-year-old Nora as a replacement for Benzema.
