Very little is known about the health of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher. His family and the doctors who are in daily contact with him have remained silent, giving room for much speculation. Now the renowned neurosurgeon Erich Riederer has come forward with his prognosis.
He did not make the public too happy with his prognosis. “I think he is in a vegetative state. He’s awake, but unresponsive. He is breathing, his heart is beating, he may even be able to sit up and take a few small steps with assistance. But that’s all, nothing more,” he said in a documentary for French television TMC.
The neurosurgeon does not have much faith in a return to normal life. “I think this is the maximum for him. And if there is still a chance to see him as he was before the accident? No, I really don’t think so,” Riederer said.
Last week, Schumacher was visited by his close friend Jean Todt. “I visited Michael last week. He’s still fighting. God, we know how the terrible and unfortunate skiing accident affected him and what problems it caused him. But his wonderful wife is standing by him.
He has his children with him, his nurses, and we can only wish him the best. As soon as it is possible for me to do something for him, I will do so,” said Todt, who is also a former Ferrari boss.
Michael Schumacher suffered brain damage in 2013 in a skiing accident in the French Alps. He has been bedridden since then and his health has been the subject of speculation.
