Viktoria Plzeň escaped the gravedigger’s shovel in the 3rd round of the Conference League! In the rematch with Welsh team TNS, they were down early, but managed to score the necessary goals at the end of the game and sent the match into overtime. No goal was scored and therefore the game was decided by a penalty shootout, in which the Pilsen players were more successful. What did the public say?
Already the first match against the outsider from Wales suggested that the road to the Conference League Play-offs (the last preliminary round) would not be easy. TNS won the home game relatively convincingly 4:2 and Plzeň had to catch up in the return leg.
In the Doosan Arena, the Pilsen team scored early and had to score at least 3 goals. Bucha, Chorý and Beauguel scored in succession. The older strikers (Chorý, Beauguel) came through at the end of the game.
In the overtime, no more goals were scored and the West Bohemian team finally succeeded in the penalty shootout, it should be noted that all the Pilsen enforcers were successful.
In the last qualifying round of the Conference League, Viktoria Plzeň will get a chance to avenge the eliminated Slovácko! The Moravian team Lokomotiv Plovdiv was defeated, but Michal Bilek’s charges will face Bulgarian team CSKA Sofia. Let’s hope that the second confrontation between Czech and Bulgarian club football will be more successful than the first one.
Reaction of the football public
The football public was cracking the whip over Viktoria on Twitter during the 0:1 scoreline, but in the end everything turned out differently. Take a look at how the public reacted to the Pilsen resurrection!
“Disgrace averted, Viktoria moves on. Pilsen suffered through it, but they deserved the promotion for their fight,” wrote Karel Häring, who did not comment during the match.
“Viktoria Plzen has not played in the group stage of the European Cups for two seasons and is in danger of adding a third. The team has 45 minutes to at least equal the three-goal lead of the Welsh amateurs. If I were to express the situation with a paraphrase of a movie title, I would think:: Ada is running for his life,” tweeted Luděk Mádl at half-time.
“Škoda/Viktoria Plzeň are playing the 13th European Cup season in their club history. But this is the first time they have ever been in a penalty shootout! Well, it’s a good thing it went well today…,” wrote Mádl after the match.
“Plzeň’s ‘beautiful’ streak continues. Under Michal Bílek’s leadership, they will not hold zero for the 11th time in 12 games. The team is close to a mega-event,” commented Czech TV editor Pavel Jahoda.
“The difference between Plzeň and TNS (especially in the end) was obvious at first sight. On the one hand, the amateurs who coincidentally made it to penalties, and on the other hand, the average team from Wales…,” wrote the famous cynic Neobjektivní Novinář.
