Slavia Prague did the unbelievable, reaching the quarter-finals of European competitions for the third time in four years. In the sum of the two semi-final matches, they knocked out LASK Linz 7:5 and are enjoying promotion to the top eight teams of the competition. In Linz, Jindřich Trpišovský’s charges played their best, but in the end they lost 3:4 and did not add valuable points to the Czech coefficient.

Before their trip to Linz, Slavia made no secret of the fact that their goal was not only to advance, but also to win the coefficient. Despite the sending off of Aihama Ousou, it looked very good until the 87th minute. Czech football was minutes away from gaining 0.400 points in the national coefficient ranking.

However, in the 85th minute, red card number two came and Srdjan Plavsic was sent off, and after a standard situation there was an immediate direct result in the form of a 3:3 draw. In the 89th minute LASK even turned the game around and the goal was there.

Moreover, the match did not go well for goalkeeper Ales Mandous. We have to praise him for his incredible pass from the 24th minute, which gave the basis for the opening goal. But otherwise he was not very good in the match, he lacked sporting luck and two goals were, according to many opinions, catchable. Will his position as number one be shaken?

Nevertheless, the Sešiovans have reasons to be happy. Yira Sor has shown that he is somewhere else in terms of speed, and he has also improved significantly in finishing. The second joy is of course the qualification to the quarter-finals of the ECL and enjoying the draw on Friday, the secret dream of winning the European trophy is still alive!

Public reaction

Jan Podroužek commented on the match, but also a lot of fans. A journalist from Deník Sport pointed out Yira Sor’s breathtaking stats, he also recalled the current Slavic stopper situation for the EKL.

And also 7 red cards for Slavia this season, which is more than the previous seasons under Trpišovský combined.

“Sor is riding a motorbike today, isn’t he?! Unreal.”

“I once drank a bottle of rum at the Votvírák and then went to the centrifuge, but even there I didn’t feel as bad as the Linz backs will after the rollercoaster ride Jirka Sor gave them.”

“I hope that when we reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League next year, the feelings will finally be positive after the rematch of the eighth round.”

“I was absolutely and icily calm when LASK scored the 4:3 goal. If they had scored 5:3, I would have run out onto the pitch and not let the match finish.”
