On Thursday, Slavia, Sparta and Jablonec will play perhaps the most important matches of the autumn. All three teams will be playing for a place in the knockout stage of the Conference Europa League, even a draw is enough for the Prague teams. How did the opponents fare over the weekend?
Union Berlin
Union Berlin had a great home game against Leipzig. The clear favourite was beaten 2-1 thanks to goals from Taiwo Awoniyi and Timo Baumgartler. The win ended Jesse Marsch’s tenure on the Leipzig bench.
Union jumped to sixth place in the table, just four points behind third-placed Leverkusen. A decent showing for a club that played in the second league three years ago. Slavia have something to worry about. At least it’s not playing at the Union Stadium.
Brondby Copenhagen
Sparta only need to draw with Brondby on Thursday to qualify for the spring part of the Conference Europa League. The Danish champions played a cup match against Midtjylland at the weekend and after a 0:2 defeat they dropped out in the quarter-finals.
But otherwise, the current Brondby cannot be compared to the one that drew at home with Sparta two months ago. They are currently on a run of six league wins in a row and are only five points behind third place.
Cluj
Cluj are doing sovereignly in their competition, with an eight-point cushion on second-placed FCSB and only two losses to drop points. Moreover, it has kept a clean sheet in five of its last six matches.
Jablonec will want to win in Romania, three points would almost certainly secure them promotion. On the other hand, Cluj is already without a chance for the knockout stage and it is unclear how they will approach the match. First of all, in terms of the composition of the line-up.
