The penultimate match of the Europa League and Conference League groups is upon us. Sparta will play Rangers, Slavia will take on Feyenoord, Jablonec will face Alkmaar.
Rangers
If Sparta is looking for a sticker for the four-goal embarrassment at Slovácko, they can find it in Scotland. Rangers, under new coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst, crashed out in the League Cup to Hibernian after losing 1:3.
The team from Glasgow played with a full squad, there was no question of any Europa League inquiries. Martin Boyle sent the visitors into the lead with a hat-trick in the 9th, 21st and 38th minutes. Arfield only reduced the arrears in the 40th minute.
Both Sparta and Rangers experienced a big disappointment ahead of Thursday’s clash. Whoever recovers better will dominate the duel for second place in the group.
Feyenoord
While Rangers held their ground against Sparta, Feyenoord, like Slavia, prepared for the duel with a cannonade. The Dutch side blasted Zwolle 4:0, with all four goals coming in the first half from Sinisterra, Til and twice from Linssen. Feyenoord are third in the table, but with a game to spare, a win in this match will move them to the top of the table ahead of Ajax.
It seems that everything is sunny at Feyenoord, but that is a mistake. Hard core Feyenoord fans have clashed with police in the streets as they bear the brunt of government restrictions that are expected to close stadiums for 3 weeks. In the Netherlands’ second largest city, there were also reportedly gunshots during the clash.
Alkmaar
A loss, a win and a draw in the third. Alkmaar shared the points with Nijmegen in a 1-1 draw in a league match, which was additionally scored by Aboukhal in the 92nd minute. Jablonec’s opponents are 12th in the Eredivisie table, but have a game in hand.
Alkmaar are doing well in the Conference League. After four games played, it is at the top of the table with 10 points, while second-placed Jablonec has five points. It needs at least a point in its last two games to secure promotion.
