Leverkusen are in an unprecedented crisis
There is no end to this crisis. Apparently, not only the fans but also the Bayer Leverkusen players must feel like this. This season, the team is going through absolute hell. It looked so promising after last season! Moreover, they managed to keep key players.
Bayer was supposed to compete with Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund this season and fight for second place, or even the title. Instead, it will have to deal with staying in the league at all. At least that’s how it looks right now. He is in the relegation zone and has only 5 points after eight rounds.
Patrik Schick is not in great form either, and like the rest of the squad, he can’t build on last season. Adam Hložek is not acclimatising easily at all. And he should be the one to pull Leverkusen through? It’s too early to say.
Even the Bayern game didn’t work out
On Friday, Bayer fell short against Bayern Munich. The latter is also not in the best form, but against Leverkusen they showed that they are on a completely different level of quality. In the Allianz Arena they did not allow any surprises and won 4:0.
Goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky made mistakes, Schick was lackluster and so was the rest of his team. The Czech striker hardly got the ball. It is no wonder that he received low marks from the statistical servers.
How did Schick and Hložek do?
The prestigious website WhoScored gave Schick a 5.9. It made him Leverkusen’s third worst player. SofaScore showed more mercy and gave the Czech goal scorer a rating of 6.4, making him the 5th worst player on the team.
Schick didn’t even play the whole game. Only for the second time this league season. He was withdrawn in the 61st minute. 13 minutes later Hložek came on the pitch and made a bigger impression.
The summer signing from Leverkusen was rated 6.1 by WhoScored. Hložek was rated 6.6 by SofaScore, which puts him among the better average players in the team.
Fans’ reactions
There isn’t much criticism of Hložek and Schick directly among Leverkusen fans. On the contrary. After all, it’s not Schick’s fault that he practically doesn’t get a good pass that he could use. After all, stats like xG just prove it.
On the other hand, the captain and goalkeeper Hradecky became the target of criticism. And not only him. Fans are running out of patience with coach Gerard Seoan. He seems to be clueless and obviously cannot wake up the team and get them out of the results crisis.
Thomas Tuchel, who Bayer fans would have liked to see at the helm, is without a commitment. It is questionable how realistic this possibility is. But if it were to happen, it would be something to watch.
