Australia are having fun. And with it, so is the entire world of football on the internet. The reason? The local A-League offered an intriguing match between the second and sixth teams on the table in the Round of 16, pitting the Central Coast Mariners against Sydney FC.

In the current season, however, Sydney is far from the title. They are 10 points behind the leader from Wellington, although they have a game in hand. However, the team that was once led by Bench did well in their last match. The second team in the table managed to beat Sydney 3:1.

The three points helped them move up the table. But apart from that, one of the team’s players amused the world. The A-League footage also went beyond Australia.

Australia saw one of its worst missed chances

The name Patrick Wood doesn’t ring a bell? No wonder. Only 21 years old, he is a promising striker who has so far been picking up starts for the likes of the Australia Under-23 national team and is a Sydney FC offspring.

He’s been playing in the A-team since 2020, so he got his opportunity early. But it can’t be said that it will help him to develop quickly. He currently has 78 first-team starts, scoring 14 goals. It’s not much, but we can definitely find strikers with worse records.

However, if Wood burns chances like he did against the Central Coast Mariners, he won’t improve his much. At 3:0 to Sydney, he put himself in quite possibly the most advantageous scoring position of his career in the 29th minute, but he missed 100% of his shots and didn’t even hit the post.

Fortunately, he doesn’t have to regret the missed opportunity, his team won. However, the club, which is a five-time champion of Australia, has made a name for itself and the question is whether it can stand the attention that is now focused on it.
