On Monday 16 January the prestigious Australian Open tournament starts and the Czech Republic has traditionally had great players in the women’s pool. But how are the Czech tennis players doing ahead of one of the season’s major tournaments?
The current top-ranked Czech tennis player is Petra Kvitova (16th). Kvitova is now participating in the Adelaide 2 tournament, where she defeated Rybakina (23rd) 6: 3 and 7: 5 in the first match.
The other top player is Barbora Krejcikova (23rd), who is yet to get into action at Adelaide 2 at 3:00 CET. It will also be her first live match this season. She will be up against American Riske-Amritraj (41st).
Also in the high tiers of women’s tennis is Maria Bouzkova (26th WTA). She is currently participating in the tournament in Hobart, where she plays as the number one seed.
Last night she beat Cristian (143rd) 7::6 and 6::3. However, she had to reverse the first set in an unfavourable 2::5 situation. It was evident that although she had the opportunity to play at the United Cup, she lacked more confidence on the racquet.
Karolina Pliskova (31st) has already had a chance to get some sharp game practice this year. At the Adelaide tournament, she lost her very first match against Ostapenko (18th WTA) quite clearly 1::6 and 3::6.
Before the Adelaide 2 tournament she had to go through qualification, which she passed and beat Niemeirer (68th) 6: 4 and 6: 3 and Rogers (53rd) 6: 4 and 6: 3. However, in the very first round of the main draw she fell to Collins (14th) 2: 6 and 4: 6 and did not show a convincing performance in this match.
The 48th WTA ranked Katerina Siniakova, who started the season with a sharp qualification of the Adelaide tournament, where she fell in the second round to Liu (59th) after 6: 0, 3: 6 and 1: 6. She then successfully qualified in Adelaide 2, where she defeated Bogdan (61st) 6: 7, 7: 5 and 7: 5 in the second round of qualifying after a great battle and will now participate in the main stage of the tournament.
Kvitova seems to be in the best form, having had a chance to play at the United Cup and beating the well-playing Rybakina in Adelaide. But I would definitely not underestimate any of our tennis players, because they have shown great performances in the past and it seems that especially Pliskova, who can surprise, hasn’t met her form yet.
