In the 1991/92 season, Sparta Prague started a frantic ride through the Champions Cup and reached the semi-finals. This journey began on Rangers’ turf. Horst Siegl reminisced about the match and the whole competition.
Forward Horst Siegl was a member of the starting line-up at the time and remembers the game in Scotland well. Sparta won the first match at home 1: 0. However, in the return leg, a goal was scored, the game went into extra time and a few minutes before the end the score was 2:0 for Rangers.
”Mania Master sent a ball down the ground from the right side, I found the ball but their stopper slid in through a slip and headed the ball into his own net over my foot. We lost 1: 2, but thanks to the goal on the opponent’s pitch we advanced and the great journey through the competition began,” he recalled the match in an interview with iSport.
In the next round, Sparta knocked defending champions Olympique Marseille out of the competition. In the semi-finals, Sparta faced Barcelona. They won 2-1 at home at Letná. One goal was scored by Siegl. In the end, however, the Catalan team was the winner.
What does he think of the former Rangers coach? ”It’s sad that a footballer like Steve Gerrard would stoop to blaming and insulting children instead of acknowledging the quality of the opposition. He was looking elsewhere for the reason for the defeat. Maybe our fans will be scared there.”
However, Gerrard is no longer coaching Rangers. He’s gone to Aston Villa. He hasn’t said goodbye to the fans or the players. They don’t seem to like him in Scotland now.
Siegel is looking forward to the game. He knows Sparta have a chance to win and secure promotion. The Czech teams can take on the Scottish ones. The former striker believes that Sparta will bounce back from the Slovácko debacle, win and still challenge for the Fortuna Liga title.
