Horror experience for Arsenal footballers, their plane caught fire on take-off!

The plane carrying the Arsenal FC women’s team back to the UK has suffered a serious technical fault. It caught fire on landing on the runway and the women footballers of the London club had the experience of a lifetime.

The very scary moments occurred as the Arsenal FC women’s team were due to return from Germany after their Champions League semi-final match against home side Wolfsburg on Sunday evening. It was the first of two clashes.

The English team did not fare well on German soil, trailing 2-0 after just 24 minutes after goals from Ewa Pajor and Sveindis Jane. But the Gunners came back into the game with a goal in the dressing room by Rafaelle Souza.

Sweden’s Stina Blacksteinius adjusted the score to the final 2: 2 and the door to the final goal is now open for both teams equally. The return leg at the Emirates will take place on 1 May.

Unfortunately for the women in red, the drama did not end there. According to the German newspaper BILD, there was a significant technical problem with the Boeing 747 that was supposed to transport the team back to London after the match.

During take-off, one of the engines burst into flames and the pilots were forced to immediately abort the take-off and evacuate everyone present. Fortunately no one was injured and the Gunners were able to travel home on Monday morning.

“Our aircraft encountered technical problems during take-off and the team was forced to stay overnight in Germany. We would like to thank not only the airport staff, but also the pilots themselves for their immediate help,” the club message read.

Jonas Eidevall’s team will be back in action on Monday 1 May in a rematch against Wolfsburg. Over 50,000 tickets have already been sold and the management hopes to fill the stadium to capacity for the final.

The runners-up will face one of the Barcelona, Chelsea pair in the final played on June 3 at Philips Stadium in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.
