The match was supposed to prepare both teams for the Olympics, but instead escalated over allegations of racism. Jordan Torunarigha didn’t take it lying down and left the field.

Germany has arranged a friendly with Honduras ahead of the Olympics in which it will play. The two sides have agreed to a non-traditional hockey format of three times thirty minutes.

Hertha Berlin’s Jordan Torunarigha played the second and third periods and was allegedly racially abused by one of the opposing players five minutes before the end of the third. There is no evidence on social media as the game was played behind closed doors.

There was confusion on the pitch, with the 23-year-old Torunarigha initially shoving his opponents, but then deciding to leave the pitch, followed by his teammates.

In an interview, the German coach Stefan Kuntz commented on the situation and logically stood up for his ward. “If one of our players is racially insulted, it is impossible to continue playing.”

It remains to be seen whether there will be any punishment before the Games start (23 July). The football tournament will see both Germany (Group D) and Honduras (Group B).
