Bayer Leverkusen are not in good form and proved it again in the Champions League. They failed to beat Belgian Club Bruggy at home, but a goalless draw was enough to advance as Atlético Madrid fell to Porto.

The Champions League, more precisely Group B, offered interesting results. There are some rather surprising qualifiers, with the Champions League going to Porto first and Club Brugge second.

The qualifiers were already certain before the last matches, but the Europa League was still on the line. Bayer Leverkusen needed to score points while hoping Atlético Madrid would not score.

And they did. Although Leverkusen only drew at home with Patrik Schick in the starting line-up, the Madrid side fell to Porto 1: 2 and are out of the European Cup.

How did the individual matches look? Leverkusen and Brugge played an even match and neither team was chasing three points. The home side in particular were aware that Atlético were losing and played accordingly.

And in the end, they were able to rejoice. Porto were already 2-0 up in the 24th minute and seemed to be done. Slight hope for Atleti came in stoppage time, but an own goal by Ivan Marcano at their end in Europe made no difference.

The Czech footballers in Leverkusen colours will thus play in the Europa League in the spring, which is at least a slight patch over the performances in the current season.
