A spicy transfer was born in the Italian Serie A. After one season at AS Roma, Pedro is changing his jersey and moving to city rivals Lazio Roma. This is the first transfer between the clubs since 1981.
The 34-year-old Spanish winger did not figure in Jose Mourinho’s plans, nor was he involved in pre-season preparations and so the club decided to allow him to leave. He had a contract with AS until 2023, but agreed to terminate it and comes to Lazio as a free agent.
This is what suits both clubs. The Giallorossi got rid of the player’s salary (reportedly 4 million euros a year) and Lazio got an experienced offensive player for free. Moreover, the club’s new coach Maurizio Sarri already knows Pedro from his time at Chelsea.
In addition to AS and Chelsea, Pedro has also worked at Barcelona and collected trophies throughout his career. He is also the only player in history to win the Champions League, Europa League, Club World Cup, European Super Cup, World Cup and European Championship.
He joined AS Roma during last summer after 5 years at Chelsea. He hit 40 games for the Italian side, scoring 6 goals and assisting 7.
He will now become the first player in 40 years to swap the jersey of one Roman club for another. The last such transfer was in 1981, when Carlo Perrone moved from Lazio to AS.
Serie A kicks off this weekend and Lazio will face an away game on Saturday against Empoli, who won promotion to the top flight last season. Will Pedro make his debut for his new club just 2 days after the transfer?
