Ligue 1? A quality competition, but its level has been lowered in the eyes of the fans in recent years by the unpleasant dominance of the star-studded PSG. However, in the historical table since the beginning of league football, we would not find the Parisian team in the top five, yet they are attacking the record.

The French league is only fifth in the coefficient ranking. While the order of the top four places changes and rotates regularly, Ligue 1’s fifth place is stable, although it was briefly displaced by the Portuguese competition in the autumn.

Even though it is the fifth best competition, it has its own quality, even if it is almost unchallenged by PSG. It is precisely because of the dominance of the Parisian side that it is interesting to look at the historical table of French league football. The Parisians are not even in the top five.

The top five places are occupied by Olympique Marseille, Girondins Bordeaux, Saint-Étienne, AS Monaco and Olympique Lyon, with only Marseille having more than 4000 points.

PSG would be looking in vain for sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth place. It rounds off the top ten with 3,071 points.

It should be noted, however, that PSG was founded in 1970, so it has 746 fewer games played in the first league than Marseille. No one in the top 15 in terms of points has played fewer games than PSG.

The Parisians also boast the highest positive goal difference. They have 947 more goals scored than goals conceded. Monaco have the second best record with 882 goals.

Interestingly then, the most successful French team in terms of league titles is the now struggling Saint-Étienne, who have their work cut out to stay among the elite. It has won 10 of them.

Olympique Marseille are second with 9 titles and it is PSG who are almost 100% likely to catch Saint-Étienne this year.

Third place in the number of titles is held by Monaco and Nantes (8), followed by Olympique Lyon (7) and Girondins Bordeaux (6).
