Hill announced a serious injury and a fight with Prochazka will not happen at least in the next few months. Will Europe get the biggest fight in history?
For months, UFC welterweight champion Jamahal Hill has been waiting for Jiri Prochazka to recover from a serious shoulder injury so he could fly straight into a title fight. But now he has suffered a serious injury himself and is facing the same road as the Czech samurai.
For months, UFC welterweight champion Jamahal Hill has been waiting for Jiri Prochazka to recover from a serious shoulder injury so he could fly straight into a title fight. But now he has suffered a serious injury himself and is facing the same road as the Czech samurai.
The championship title fight was just days before the official announcement
The long awaited championship match will not be given after all. The UFC’s welterweight division is once again receiving a blow of fate and another champion is out of the picture due to a serious injury. What does this mean for the Czech samurai and the entire division?
When Jiri Prochazka announced a serious shoulder injury late last year, he was forced to relinquish his welterweight championship at the insistence of UFC management. That title, by a strange coincidence, ended up going to the division’s then-sixth man, Jamahal Hill.
UFC boss Dana White, however, promised that as soon as Prochazka was medically cleared, he would return to the title picture immediately. So champion Hill waited for many months for his return and it must be added that he was at times very upset about the situation.
But with both opponents, including the head of the organization , having already confirmed their match, the next blow came. Champion Hill announced on his YouTube channel that he too has suffered a serious injury and is pulling out of the fight.
Champion Hill is seriously injured and will go through the same path as the Czech samurai
“You all probably know that I have been waiting for months for my first title defense with Jiri. But unfortunately you will have to wait for that fight. I suffered an injury, I broke my achilles,” announced the disappointed champion with tears in his eyes.
“It is one of those serious injuries that requires surgery, time and rehabilitation,” he confirmed that he will be out for many months like the Czech samurai. Hill also confirmed that he will follow the same path.
“You see, I got to the title by having someone before me suffer a similarly serious injury. He vacated his title so that others could fight for it. So that the division would not stand still and could move forward. And I will do the same,” he showed the huge heart of a warrior in the mold of Prochazka.
What this means for Procházka and the rest of the division
What does this mean for the division and the Czech samurai? Chances are Dana White will keep his word and Procházka will get a shot at the title. No word yet on how long Hill will be out, but he’s not expected to return with such an injury later this year.
So the following seems to be the most realistic option in practice. Because at the end of July, we get a fight between Jan Blachowicz and Alex Pereira. And it is the winner of this fight who could get a title shot with Prochazka.
So there’s a good chance that Europe could get the biggest MMA fight in history, and Dana White could hear about it. Such a fight would promote itself, of course.
