He’s been running Manchester City’s website for 10 years and doesn’t consider Agüero’s goal to be his finest moment. That’s Liam Maine

The Sky Blues – CZ/SK Facebook page has been on the platform for a decade and provides some very interesting information about the current Premier League champions. Since when did he become a Manchester City fan? And how did he get involved with the team? You can find out in an exclusive interview with Liam Maine, the main admin of the Czechoslovakian Citizens website, on Ruik.
How did you get to Manchester City?
I started following Manchester City in 2005, but I didn’t consider myself a fan then. I liked them a lot because they were a very likeable club and coincidentally very close to a music group called Oasis.
Oasis has always been my favourite music group and my love for music also gradually spilled over into football. I have followed the Citizens regularly since the 2005/06 season, but I don’t count myself as a fan until after 27 February 2010.
Last season the Citizens won the Premier League and the League Cup, however they fell to Chelsea in the Champions League final. Was that the hardest defeat for you personally and for the fans?
Of course it was very difficult because it was the first UCL final ever, but that’s sport. I’ve had a lot of defeats and disappointments in my life as a fan, so I took it quite sportingly. We have to admit that Chelsea were the better team and they deserved to win. I hope we can do better in the next final and finally win this prestigious trophy.
But let’s get back to more positive things. A seventh title in the English top flight, 12 points ahead of our main rivals Manchester United. Is that title all the sweeter with city rivals in second place?
It’s been a very successful season because to win a third title in four years is really unique in England. It was very pleasing to leave Manchester United in second place, but winning the title is still the most important thing, leaving United in second place is just a nice bonus.
What is your most memorable moment as a Manchester City fan? For most, it’s probably Sergio Agüero’s famous goal at the end of the 2011/2012 season..
I agree that 93::20 will probably always be the most memorable moment in our history, but personally I’d go for winning at Old Trafford by 6::1 a few months earlier. It was a warning for Manchester United to watch out for us, but it failed.
Many football fans refer to the club pejoratively due to the huge amount of finance brought in by the City Football Group. How do you deal with these labels? After all, results have been getting better recently.
Personally I don’t dwell on this too much as I’ve been a fan of the club since I was 11 years old and I’m 23 today, after all this time you let a lot of things go. If someone enjoys going on and on about something for maybe 10 years or more, I guess it’s their complex. I have no problem having a sensible conversation with anyone about the club, but if it’s just various name calling, there’s probably no point in paying attention.
What does the job of the main admin of a football club’s fansite actually entail?
It’s quite time consuming because there aren’t many of us and you have to keep the site active so it doesn’t die. You have to always look for up-to-date information and various statistics, which could be a problem for some people. At the same time you have to learn what sources are suitable for sharing and what are pure sensationalism/bubble. Especially during the transfer period, there are a lot of tabloid reports that you need to avoid if you want to be a trustworthy admin among your community.
How long has the Sky Blues – CZ/SK website been up and running?
We have been on Facebook for about 10 years, but our page has been deleted twice, so our current page (Sky Blues – CZ/SK) has been up for a little over half a year.
How many people actually have to rotate around the Facebook page for it to work as intended?
It depends on the quality of the admins and the community. If you have 2-3 quality admins, you can make a very popular page that is up to date and people like. At the same time, if we have 7 admins who are not quality, your page can go down solidly.
You guys have also recently started a podcast MCFC OK! What is it normally about and can your fans join in?
In our podcast we try to discuss current topics that concern our club. Usually it is 2 hours in which we discuss easily 6-7 current topics. Fans can join in with questions on the podcast or they can join in directly with our conversation and take part in one of the episodes.
What is your biggest accomplishment so far and what are you looking forward to in the future?
I would say the biggest success is the MCFC OK! podcast because it was something new for us and we were able to expand to other platforms. In the future we plan to release videos on our YouTube channel (MCFC OK!) in addition to podcasts to help bring our club to a wider audience.
Maybe then people will realize that this club is much, much more than just the property of an Arab sheikh.
And finally, what results do you expect from the Citizens in the 2021/22 season, which will start for Pep Guardiola’s charges on 7 August in the Community Shield match against Leicester?
Manchester City have set a very high bar in previous years, so we have the highest possible ambitions. In the 2021/22 season we must try to defend the title and fight for some more trophies. Of course, winning the UCL (Champions League) would be the best, especially after last season’s final, but that’s a long way off.
The UCL is very much about luck, so it’s virtually impossible to predict. However, I think I speak for everyone, including Pep (Guardiola), when I say we want to win everything. First up is the Super Cup with Leicester, but that’s probably the least of our trophy ambitions.
