Olympic freestyle champion Henry Cejudo has named what he believes are the five best MMA fighters in the history of the sport. The winner was the legendary Jon Jones, but MMA’s undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov surprisingly didn’t make his top five.
Henry Cejudo, who last month invited our iron in the fire of the world’s leading organization UFC Jiri Prochazka to a camp in the USA, is considered an expert on the word when it comes to knowledge of combat sports.
The self-proclaimed greatest combat sports athlete of all time has naturally made the list. But undefeated former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is surprisingly absent from his list.
Cejudo, a former UFC champion of two weight classes at once who shares the same management as Khabib, explains the reasons for his selection. “The Russian Eagle” didn’t make his list because he reportedly never became a two-division champion.
“I believe he’s in the top 10 even though he only had 12 fights in the UFC like me,” Cejudo said on The Triple C & Schmo Show. “But if he won a second belt and then won another title, he would even be above me because he was undefeated,” he still expressed his appreciation for the Dagestani fighter.
5. place – Georges St-Pierre
31. january 2009, Las Vegas. UFC fighter Georges St-Pierre celebrates with the championship belt after defeating BJ Penn during the welterweight title fight at UFC 94. St-Pierre defeated Penn by TKO in the fourth round.
St-Pierre, widely considered the greatest welterweight of all time, won the welterweight title and then the middleweight title in his last UFC fight after returning from a four-year retirement. The Canadian defended his welterweight title nine straight times before relinquishing it.
4. place – Henry Cejudo
Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo has stated on several occasions that he considers himself the best fighter of all time across all fighting disciplines. He eventually placed his person as high as fourth place. Not only did he manage to win a gold medal at the Atlanta Olympics, but he held both the UFC’s flyweight and bantamweight titles at the same time. He also defended both titles.
3. place – Anderson Silva
Anderson Silva’s dominance of the UFC middleweight division was a true gem. “The Spider” defended his UFC title 10 times in a row while being known for his incredible highlights. Although he never competed for the welterweight title, he moved up in weight class several times during his title reign and won several fights there.
2. place – Demetrious Johnson
Although Henry Cejudo was the man who eventually dethroned him from the flyweight throne, he could not overlook the qualities of Demetrious Johnson. Johnson holds the record for the most consecutive title defenses in UFC history with 11. He thus completely dominated the flyweight division from 2012 to 2017. In addition, he was one of only two fighters to defeat Cejudo himself in MMA.
1. place – Jon Jones
Aside from a disqualification for illegal elbows , Jon Jones has never lost in MMA. The former UFC welterweight champion has defended his belt against generations of talent and has won a total of 11 title defenses in the UFC.
Jones is the only fighter who is expected to continue making history in his career as an MMA fighter. In fact, he has plans to move up to heavyweight where he will attempt to win a UFC title in another weight class. This would likely make him the undisputed king of MMA given his illustrious career.
