He is already a member of the ATP top ten for the fourth year. Yet Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz is not one of the most watched players. But this tennis player definitely deserves attention and not only because of his results.
Hurkacz and his habit
It took some time for tennis fans to notice this fact. Hubert Hurkacz closes his eyes when he hits his shots.
The 27-year-old tennis player has always played like this, although he knows that a change could help him. There are some things that are hard to change.
Hurkacz has been one of the best players in the world for several years, has played in the Tournament of Champions and has enjoyed seven triumphs on the ATP circuit. So far, he has lacked much success at the Grand Slams.
At the most valuable tournaments he can boast only one semi-final appearance at Wimbledon. But he certainly has the ingredients for great results.
Great serve
The native of Wroclaw has long dominated the tables that focus on service. Over the last year he has won almost eighty percent of the points after his first serve.
With an average of over fifteen aces per match, he is second to none in the world. Hurkacz wins on average almost ninety percent of the games in which he is on serve.
Bottom line, he leaves the rest of the players behind in the crucial category of service. It’s no surprise that he achieves his best results on fast surfaces. But this week, the Pole is also doing great on clay.
Estoril tournament
At the clay tournament in Estoril, Portugal, Hurkacz had to turn around his very first match. Qualifier Choinski broke the Polish player’s serve in the first set, but Hurkacz finally overcame him 7:6, 6:4.
On his way to the final, the Polish tennis player lost a single set. In the semifinals, he lost the second set against Chilean Cristian Garin. However, he made it through the decider and will play his first career clay final in Portugal.
His opponent Pedro Marinez from Spain is having a great season. He reached the semi-finals in Santiago in February and even won the challenger in Girona a week ago.
In Portugal, he even took on the number one seed Casper Ruud. Hurkacz is now facing an opponent who is definitely in good form. But the Pole has a lot to build on, having already beaten the Spaniard three times in his career.
