He was tempted by Bayern or Liverpool, but Ruben Amorim still said he was loyal to Sporting. And now, according to the latest reports, this is definitely confirmed.
Amorim is currently considered one of the most talented coaches in the world. He led Sporting to the 2021 championship title, and he accomplished the same feat at the end of this season.
The team from Lisbon scored 90 points in the last season of the Portuguese top flight and even had a ten-point lead over second-placed Benfica. It is not surprising that Amorim was on the list of several clubs as a potential replacement.
Bayern Munich or Liverpool were tempted to sign him, Barcelona were considering him. However, Amorim is not going to any of the three giants.
Needless to say, a complication for some suitors could be the exit clause, which is set at €20 million in the Sporting coach’s contract.
In any case, Sporting have put an end to all speculation, according to the latest reports. Amorim is definitely staying at the Lisbon club, club president Frederico Varandas reportedly confirmed to Portuguese newspaper Record. Only thirty-nine years old, Amorim is still under contract at Sporting for two more years.
Amorim stays to be successful, says club president
“While in 2018 almost no coach wanted to come and lead Sporting, today we have one of the best coaches in the world. We had him four years ago, we have him now and we will have him next year,” said Varandas, whose words are also quoted by inFootball.
“It’s not because of financial reasons or lack of interest from other clubs that he stays here year after year. He stays here because Sporting is the club that gives him protection, stability and the conditions to be successful and happy,” the club president added.
