Barcelona shelled out €135 million to Borussia Dortmund for Ousmane Dembélé in 2017, vowing that the French winger could replace the departed Neymar. Unfortunately, they were grossly mistaken and may lose their ‘super talent’ for good next year.

Dembélé is a very hot topic in Barcelona. The management of the Catalan club is trying to convince the 24-year-old winger to sign a new contract, but according to the Spanish daily Sport, the negotiations ended in failure.

The French winger himself reportedly wants to stay at the Camp Nou, but he is demanding a higher financial compensation, which is a big problem for the Catalan outfit at the moment and which they have no way of solving.

Moreover, one has to take into account the fact that he has spent most of his time at Barcelona recovering from his injuries and has certainly not lived up to the huge expectations that were placed on him.

In more than 4 years at Barcelona, Dembélé has played just 121 games, scoring 30 goals and assisting another 21. We certainly wouldn’t be far from the truth if we said he has been injured more times than he has scored goals.

However, history is full of such talents who failed to fulfil their potential due to poor health. But many have been helped by a change of scenery, new air and motivation.

This could be the case with Dembélé, who still has his best ahead of him and can still translate his immense talent into goals and trophies.

How the whole situation will play out is unclear. What is certain, however, is that the French winger could leave for free in the summer, and that certainly doesn’t suit the Catalan outfit in their current situation.

Therefore, there is talk that if the two sides fail to reach an agreement by the end of the year, Dembélé will be sold and the club will at least get some funds to buy new players.

However, according to CEO Ferran Reverter, Barcelona still have the finances to bring in new reinforcements in January and even in the summer. However, there are undoubtedly not many of them and the club can no longer afford to take any more steps on the sidelines.
